Hyperice is a leading recovery technology company serving as the Official Recovery Technology Partner for major sports leagues including the NBA, NFL, and MLB. From percussion massage devices to their collaboration with Nike on the Hyperboot, they've established themselves as the industry standard for professional recovery technology, trusted by elite athletes like LeBron James and Naomi Osaka.

With their highly anticipated HyperSmart mobile application launch just one month away, Hyperice needed to overhaul their backend system to handle the expected user demand. The challenge was creating a system that could seamlessly integrate with multiple health tracking platforms like Apple Health, Android Health, Strava, Garmin, and Whoop, while processing massive amounts of real-time physiological data from these sources to generate personalized recovery recommendations using their Hyperice device ecosystem.

We redesigned and rebuilt their backend architecture around their existing NestJS framework, engineering sophisticated algorithms to reconcile conflicting physiological data across multiple health platforms. Through strategic PostgreSQL optimization and Redis in-memory caching strategies, we achieved the performance needed to handle the expected user demand. We implemented an AI-powered longevity scoring system and a recovery recommendation engine tightly integrated with the notifications system.

The overhauled system launched on schedule, enabling Hyperice's evolution from individual recovery devices to an integrated smart recovery ecosystem. This transformation positioned them to capture significantly more value from their existing customer base while establishing the technical foundation for sustained growth and market leadership in the evolving recovery technology landscape.

A NestJS backend written in TypeScript exposes type-safe APIs for the HyperSmart mobile app, with PostgreSQL as the source of truth for user and device data and Redis caching the hot physiological signals that drive real-time recovery scoring. Firebase handles authentication and push notifications, AWS provides the underlying compute and managed services, and CircleCI runs the continuous delivery pipeline that shipped the overhaul on schedule.
